I have been a laptop owner and user for quite some time now. I bought my laptop 2 years ago in the year 2007 and it is still alive and kicking. One of the primary reasons that it is still working even though it has already been several years is because I take extra care that it does not overheat. It is much like having fever. You do not let yourself overheat as it may not just cause you to be uncomfortable but it may also damage parts of your body if you let your temperature go too high. The same can be said with a laptop. If it overheats, its parts will get damaged ultimately causing the untimely "death" of your laptop.
So what do you do when a laptop gets hot? Well, as I have already said, go buy a laptop cooler to do so. However, if you do not have one and you need to continue working on your laptop, then you could sort of remedy the problem using a couple of unorthodox techniques.
First, check where your internal cooling fans are. Most likely, these are underneath your laptop. So what we want to do here is give those fans some extra breathing room so that the hot air can dissipate naturally. You can use anything to elevate your laptop but I personally use a book thick enough to elevate the rear part of my laptop making a triangular space underneath for the hot air ventilation.
Another fool-proof way is to go to an air-conditioned room. Coupled with the first technique, this will certainly cool your laptop in no time at all.
Third is by turning-off or closing process-intensive programs. When I say process-intensive, I meant those programs that use your laptop’s processing power and memory a lot. Examples of such programs are Photoshop, high-graphic games, etc… So if you can help it, close such programs or just use them one at a time.
The techniques are above are those that I have personally used and have found to be effective. The only problem is I can’t always use a book to elevate my laptop, I am not always in an air-conditioned room and avoiding process-intensive is not always possible. So if you are in the same situation as I am, you can follow the techniques above temporarily. However, like I always tell my friends, if you want your laptop to last longer, go buy a laptop cooler!
