Laptop Buying Guide – Part 3

Each brand developed its’ own screen quality technology. Glossy finish, reflection preventing layer, high quality colors, high contrast, LCD backlight system, single lamp, dual lamp backlight or LED backlight system are the features that determine quality between laptop models and brands. Consider laptop screen technologies within your budget limit.

If you are fan of HD films or 3D enhanced games, take my advice and get a laptop with at least 15.4 inches size. Of course 16 inches or bigger screens are better for this kind of use especially ones with 16:9 aspect ratio and wide cinematic screen. Also three colored LED backlight, dual lamp technology or full LED backlight screens provide much more better display quality when compared to traditional normal laptops. You can take advantage of big screens and split them into two different screens to make things easier and faster.

Processor:

When someone says speed about a computer processors come to mind. This is true in a way, but lacking. Because processor affects only process speed, data transfer speed is bound to mainboard, revolutions per minute of hard disk, RAM’s bandwidth frequency and some other factors. Each system affects other ones.

Here are some tips for multi-tasking in laptops and being able to use programs with high speed, meaning high speed in general.

1- GHz next to the processor’s name means its clock speed. You can not determine speed of a processor only with that. For example we have two processors with 2 GHz process clock speed, one has 800 MHz Fsb, and the other’s is 1066 MHz. In this kind of a situation of course 1066 MHz responds quicker. But what are these MHz things?

2- Processors have a data transfer speed between motherboard, most of users don’t know about them. Shown with MHz units, processors have a part named ALU -Arithmetic logic unit- that transfers process results to mainboard. It has something to do with North Bridge on mainboard.

3- Nowadays most of the laptops use multi-cored processors. This is an important point. More than one cored processors allows multi-tasking. These cores data distribution principle changes as core architecture changes. With every new technology core architecture improves and changes. You can find which class of architecture your processors are in by searching through the pr 1000 oducer’s web site.

4- And there is an expression names L2 Cache memory that comes with multi cored processors. Produced in sizes like 2 MB, 4 MB, 6 MB, scales with quality. This memory is independent from RAM. Processor uses this memory to keep results of most used processes. Affects process speed, more space means faster results.

5- Check energy consuming rates of the laptop you are going to buy, be sure cooling system is enough to keep processor cool enough. Nobody wants an overheating laptop.

Small Laptop Computer Buying Guide

What is the main purpose of buying a laptop? Are you a professional that desires a lightweight alternative to the desktop PC? Do you travel and lugging around a heavy laptop with luggage is becoming unbearable? What about a student that needs to take notes in class or needs a convenient portable option for group projects? Or the Mom that would like to look up recipes and keep in touch with other moms but needs her counter space?

Most laptop computers have a wide range of sizes and features. A mini-notebook is exceptionally light, weighing an average of 2.5 pounds. Most mini screens are between 7 and 10 inches and have a battery that lasts only 2 to 3 hours, though upgraded batteries are available. The mini has limited functions and a small keyboard. It is best for someone who needs only to surf the internet, send and receive email and take notes. Mini-notebooks are relatively inexpensive. They are a great secondary computer for quick easy outings when getting back to the primary computer is not a problem.

Other small laptops that have more full feature functions are best if a primary computer is the desire. Weighing between 5 and 9 pounds, laptops are a great option and a popular choice in place of bulky desktop computers. Daily tasks such as word processing, web searching and photo editing are basic features available on most laptops. The key features to consider when shopping are screen size, hard drive, memory, processor speed, optical drive and wireless network capability. Screens range from 12 to 18 inches and the choice will depend on the sacrifice of a small screen for portability or the need for a larger screen due to eyesight and possible eyestrain. How much is going to be stored on the laptop? If it is the primary computer an adequate hard drive and memory are needed or an external unit may be necessary. Is entertainment, gaming and multimedia a must have? An optical drive is best if the computer will be used to watch movies or TV. For gamers, a computer with exceptional graphics, peripheral ports and adequate memory will be necessary. With Wi-Fi hot spots in most public venues, wireless network capabilities are a must.

Laptop computers are a great option for power, performance and portability. Choosing the right one is key to overall satisfaction. It is best to research options and know what your needs are before you buy.

Laptop Buying Guide – Should You Buy An Ultra Thin Notebook Computer?

Several of the major computer manufacturers now offer ultra thin, very sleek and, above all, fantastic looking small laptops. Sony recently launched their TZ Ultraportable and in January 2008 Apple unveiled the MacBook Air. These laptops are at the cutting edge of available consumer computer technology and their unique selling point is how portable and lightweight they are. However, these are expensive laptops and the question remains – will you be getting good value for money?

The first thing to consider is exactly what you will be using your new laptop for. These ultra thin laptops maybe small, but this comes at the expense of power. They are not the most powerful laptops available because the manufacturers have had to closely pack all the components in. If you are going to be editing movies or running other power hungry applications you should go for the most powerful laptop you can get for your budget.

Secondly you should consider how much you travel with your computer, how long for and what you do with it when you do travel. These ultra portable laptops are extremely thin and particularly easy to transport, but how hard is your current laptop to carry around? For example, if you were to buy a MacBook Air you have to consider that it does not have an interchangeable battery. If you travel for long periods of time without access to power then after the battery runs out you have to wait to charge it. With a larger, more traditional laptop you could simply replace the battery with a spare one. There is a great deal of compromise in these ultra portable laptops and you need to truly assess your requirements (everything from connection ports to screen size) before committing. It may be that a laptop just an inch thicker is more suitable.

Finally, there is one more important aesthetic to consider before you purchase a new laptop and that is the style factor. Ultra portable laptops are at the lead edge of personal computer technology and they look sensational. Do you want to be just another commuter with a standard laptop on the train, or would you prefer to stand out from the crowd with an laptop so compact it oozed style and design cool. The answer to that question can only be decided by you.

Laptop Buying Guide – Choosing One That’s Right For Your Needs

Given their portability, increased performance, and lower cost, laptops have become the computer of choice, gradually replacing desktop systems. Need a new laptop? Here are the key items and features to look for before you make your next purchase.

RAM/Memory
Every computer comes with a certain amount of physical memory (how much information and data it can store). Generally, laptops are limited compared to desktops when it comes to the amount of memory they have. Determine the maximum memory the system can handle and if a memory upgrade can be completed by you or needs to be installed by a technician. 2GB is recommended for Windows Vista or Mac OS X while 512MB is sufficient for all other Windows and Mac operating systems. Make sure to take into account the applications you plan on using the most – this will have an effect on how much RAM you’ll need.

Size/Weight
While a light, ultra-portable laptop is ideal if you’re on the move frequently, you may have to sacrifice certain things such as a disk drive (much like the Apple MacBook Air). On the contrary, you don’t want the ultimate performance laptop if it’s inconvenient or uncomfortable to tote around.

Display Size
Unlike desktop screens, laptops have thin, liquid-crystal displays – or LCDs. These displays determine the brightness, color, and sharpness of the screen. Notebook LCD sizes range from 10 inches to 20 inches; 14 inch or larger is usually recommended for LCD screens. Compare different screen sizes at your local dealer and be aware that the size of the screen will directly effect the overall weight of the system.

Hard Drives
A hard drive allows you to save and store programs and files for as long as you want (or at least for the life of the drive). How much storage space you think you’ll need will determine the amount of space you’ll want to get. 60GB to 80GB is relatively standard on most budget laptops and should be plenty, unless you plan on storing lots of music files, movies, and digital photos. If that’s the case, look into a system that offers much more space or research external hard drive alternatives.

Battery Life
What good is a portable laptop if you can only get one hour out of it on a single charge? Check out the manufacturer’s listed battery life and look for laptops that offer media bays that can also serve as an extra battery slot. At the very least, you should be able to get 2 hours of battery life.

Check out Your Local Dealer
Do your homework! Check out local computer dealers and stores to research and handle different models in person. This is especially ideal if size and weight of the system is of the utmost importance to you.

Read Consumer Product Reviews
Consumer product reviews can offer a wealth of information regarding the laptops you are interested in. Users share the pros, cons, and other miscellaneous information regarding various systems, subsequently providing you with additional information to help you make the right purchase.
