Although, it may not be the most expensive hardware to replace, the hard drive may be the most important part of your computer! We all have things stored there that would be hard or impossible to replace if the hard drive fails or becomes corrupt.
While you may not be able to just run out and get a new computer if your motherboard crashed, you could eventually replace the computer. But, those business files or family pictures could literally be irreplaceable!
Getting in the habit of doing a regular backup of all of your business and personal files could be one of the most important things that you could do. Whether it’s brand new or several years old, things can happen and hardware can fail!
You can do scheduled backups of your total system that can be used if the hard drive just becomes corrupt. But, personal or business files should be backed up to CD’s on a regular basis.
Another way to extend the life of your harddrive is by running defrag on a regular basis. The hard drive head has to work harder when files are split and scattered, defragging rejoins these files and puts less strain on the hard drive.
A surge protector can be the lifeline for a computer during power surges or outages. All electrical strips are not surge protectors, make sure that the electrical strip your purchase specifically says that it provides surge protection.
While electrical surges or drops normally don’t affect household appliances, it can destroy computer components. Anytime there is a power outage you should wait at least five minutes before restarting your computer. Within the first few minutes after power is restored, it’s usually not at full wattage and you could experience problems.
Both moisture and temperature can have devastating effects on your computer. The recommended room temperature for most computers should be between 60 to 85 degrees and the humidity should range from 50 to 75 percent.
Make sure that your computer has an adequate supply of air. The air flow as well as the fans work to keep your mother board and other hardware from overheating. Replace any faulty fans as soon as possible, even a fan that is just not working properly won’t supply enough cool air.
The vents on the sides of your CPU unit allow the proper amount of air to flow through the unit. Never have your CPU setting flush against a wall or your computer desk. There should be at least three or four inches of open space on each side of your tower.
The dust, hair and other particles sucked in by the computers fan can be a common reason for hardware failure. These particles adhere to the hardware and produce friction causing it to overheat.
Regularly clean and vacuum the area around your desk to decrease the amount of particles that are drawn in by the fan. At least once a year remove the cover on your CPU and clean the inside with a can of compressed air. Never stick anything inside your computer such as a vacuum hose, no matter how careful you are it only takes one slip to short out your entire system.
Sometimes things happen that we just can’t prevent and entire computer systems go down. But, by caring for your system properly you may be able to add years to it’s life!
