Pre-Owned Laptop Can Be a Great Buy When Bought Wisely

If you are contemplating of buying a laptop but are being deterred by budget constraints, there is a solution. How about buying a used laptop or a refurbished laptop? There is no doubt about the fact that a new laptop if the best option for those who have the means. The primary aim of buying pre-owned products is saving money. However, this aim cannot be achieved if the buyer does not make an informed purchase. Irrespective of the amount of money you are parting with, it is important that the product you are getting is worth the price you are paying for it. If this is not the case, you are in for a poor bargain and your decision to buy an old laptop may be wrong.

refurbished laptopsIn order to make an informed and prudent purchase, there are quite a few things you will need to find out. Firstly, ensure that you do your homework well. This will involve studying the market and available models of laptops. Compare and contrast one product against another in order to pick the best ones. The Internet can be of great help, as there are several websites that have provision for comparison. Shortlist the stores that you think will offer you the best laptops at competitive prices. It is a good option to purchase refurbished pre-owned laptops from the original manufacturers of the product.

Refurbished models come with a big advantage, especially so if you are making a direct purchase from the manufacturer. When a unit is sent for refurbishing, each part is tested separately and verified for proper performance. Non-conformity to set standards of performance entails the part to be replaced. This process leads to a laptop assemblage that performs as good as new. All the same, this does not mean that the manufacturer can sell the unit for the price of a new laptop. Instead, he will need to offer a substantive discount on the laptop. The fact that the buyer is at the advantageous end goes without saying.

What are the features that you must check before buying the used product? There are several aspects of the laptop that you need to scrutinize before finalizing the deal. Check the memory size, the size of the hard disk, the speed and type of the processor, the drives that come with the unit, wireless options, and so on an so forth. You must also find out the date of manufacturing. If the laptop is very old, it may be too outmoded for you to use, thereby making your purchase a worthless one.

There are two more important features that you must evaluate prior to the purchase of the old laptop. The primary advantage of a laptop is its mobility. The two features that we are referring to enhance the mobility of the laptop. The first is its weight and the second is its battery condition. Check if the weight of the laptop is suitable for you to carry around and manage. An extremely heavy laptop may prove to be a burden. When you are on the move, it is important that the battery provides a backup that will sustain the laptop throughout the trip. Hence, ensure that the battery is in good condition.

After you have selected the pre-owned laptop you wish to buy, ensure that all the accessories, peripherals and warranty are in place. Also, ensure that you are being given the laptop you actually selected. With a little care, you will be able to buy an old laptop that can last you for years to come.

pre-owned computer hardware

when buying a used laptop you must be careful online. you must realize that many times people sell used laptops because there is something wrong with them.

Choosing the Best Laptop For Yourself

You can even decide whether to buy a brand new laptop or a used one. For sure buying pre-owned laptops will be lot cheaper than buying a brand new one. But you also have to consider the longevity and performance.

purchase the best pre-owned laptop

this means that there is in essence, nothing wrong with pre-owned laptop. if you have colleagues and family who could recommend reputable used portable computer sellers, it would be best to try those vendors first.

How to Find a Good Cheap Laptop

So you want a laptop but you don’t have thousands of dollars to spend? Don’t worry – there are plenty of ways to find a cheap laptop if you know where to look. Fortunately, laptop prices have actually come down quite a bit in recent years, so they aren’t as expensive as they used to be. It’s pretty easy to find laptop deals, especially if you wait for sales to pop up.

Cheap laptops are only worth the low price if they come with the features and specs you need in a computer. That means you should look for a high quality laptop at a reasonable price. Purchasing a laptop with the lowest price tag doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting a good deal. If it doesn’t perform well, it’s not worth the money. The best laptop deals usually come from sales being held by an electronics store on laptops that you actually want.

If you don’t have the patience (or the time) to keep your eyes constantly peeled for the next big sale, there are better ways to find cheap laptops. You can check out a used computer store to see if they have any good deals – used laptops are often only a few years old, still work well, and come for dramatically reduced prices. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, you can find a second-hand laptop that’s almost new at this kind of store.

Online shopping is another great way to find laptop deals. Online stores tend to offer lower prices, and when they have sales, you can find laptops for even less. Or, you can go the wholesale route and try to find the laptop you’re looking for from a reputable wholesaler on the Internet. Finding cheap laptops isn’t always easy, but it is possible. Once you start to know and understand the different sources that sell laptops, you’ll become an expert at scouting out the rare finds.

Comparison shopping is also important if you want to find the best laptop deals out there. If you don’t do some research and compare the prices on laptops in different stores, you won’t know where the best deals are being offered. Again, this only applies to regular stores – if you want the lowest prices available for cheap laptops, you’ll have to go directly to sources that the average consumer doesn’t know about.

In addition to stores selling used laptops, you can search for online sites or stores selling refurbished laptops. Refurbished laptops are cheaper because they have a minor flaw, or have been returned by customers, and are being re-sold to the public. Stores can’t sell the laptops for regular prices, so you can pick up some amazing laptop deals this way if you’re willing to take a bit of a chance and deal with purchasing something that isn’t in perfect condition. With this method you can buy cheap laptops that are the newest models.

Used laptop stores may offer slightly better deals, but you can’t purchase brand new laptops at this type of store. Refurbished models, on the other hand, are new and up-to-date, except for the fact that the box may have already been opened.

Maintenance For Laptop

Clean
Since your laptop is an expensive gadget (despite falling prices), be extremely careful while cleaning the screen. Make sure the fabric is very soft, and has no imprints or monograms on it, since they may scratch the screen. Also make sure that the fabric is free of lint, rather than leaving fibers on the screen, and make clear the screen. Make sure you do not spray any cleaner directly on the screen. Instead, spray on the cleaning cloth, and allow the fabric to trap dirt and contaminants.

Choose Spray
The screen is the most expensive component of your laptop. Adequate care must be taken when selecting cleaning spray. Duras aerosols could turn on the display of yellow, and can even cause cracks. Use water or vinegar to clean the screen.

Put the laptop
Hard drives work on the property of magnetic flux, so any electric field can damage the hard disk and the data on it. Make sure your laptop is at least 13 cm away from any electrical appliance that generates a strong magnetic field, such as a microwave oven.

Give him a breather
If you just turn off the laptop, give it 30 seconds before starting again. This ensures that the hard disk has spun down, and is not subject to sudden change and outside.

Backing up data

Always back up your data. Laptops are mobile devices, and are susceptible to breakage. Moreover, it is possible that the hard disk simply hangs. Remember, you can not back up too often.

Laptop Battery care

The nightmare of most laptop users is the lack of a really long battery life. There are three main types of laptop batteries:

Nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd)
Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH)
Lithium Ion (Li-ion).
Nickel-cadmium

This type of battery must be completely unloaded, and then fully recharged every few weeks. If not, you will quickly lose battery life because of what is known as the "memory effect".

The memory effect means that if you do not follow the above procedure, the battery is charged only up to the percentage of the last charge. For example, if the discharge to 30 percent, just load up the remaining 70 percent. Do this repeatedly, and 30 percent will become unusable, giving it 70 percent effective against even though the indicator still show a 100 per cent charge each time you load.

Nickel Metal Hydride

Ni-MH batteries are similar to those of Ni-Cd, although they are less susceptible to the effects of memory. They also have a greater capacity.

Lithium Ion

These are the latest type of battery, and had no real problems with respect to the memory effect is concerned. The problem with these is that they lose their effectiveness if too much or left for a long time with a full load. Always perform these batteries are going to be storing away.

Keep your battery Sano
Before first use, battery charging for 12 hours or the minimum charge time, as mentioned in the manual.
For daily use, charge the battery capacity, and then run the laptop on battery power until it is completely exhausted (for Ni-Cd or Ni-MH battery, this prevents the memory effect) or nearly exhausted. (For Li-ion batteries, it can help prevent overloading).
Do not let the battery unused for long periods of time. Even if the use of AC power for most of the time, the use of the battery regularly to keep in good condition. Disconnect the AC adapter when the laptop is not in use. This prevents overcharging.
To prolong battery life, you can try to decrease the brightness of the LCD, while through his notebook. You can turn mode "and" hibernation "powersaving ways, too, for a better battery life.

Battery storage

If you do not use your laptop for long periods of time-a week or more remove the battery from the notebook, but only after the performance of a whole.
Batteries should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from heat, moisture and dust and metal objects.

Using a laptop case

It is advisable to spend a couple of thousand rupees and get a solid Carry-its laptop. The case to case should ideally be difficult from the outside and soft within, without ceasing to be a comfortable fit. Must be able to absorb shocks and keep your laptop accessories.

Keep out Eatables
Obviously, not eating and drinking near or around your laptop. The least bit of water could short-circuit some sensitive portable circuits, and make it useless.

Without boot
You may sometimes be tempted to turn your laptop off simply by pressing the power button until it powers down. Although fast, this method is harmful to the laptop and could cause data loss.A difficult to restart only to be used as a last resort. Sometimes this is inevitable, for example, when Windows crashes. However, this should not be a regular practice.

General Tips

Shortcuts to success
Create shortcuts to your most commonly used applications, folders and files on the desktop. In this way, you can access them quickly. If you like your desk free of clutter, you can also create toolbars in Windows XP.To this, right-click on the taskbar in Windows, go to Toolbars’ ` ‘and click New bar tools. "Next, select the drive or folder you want to use to access the toolbar. You can create different toolbars for different units and folders. This is expecially helpful for sales executives who want easy access to the presentations, programs and other information they use on a daily basis.

Clean up trash
Uninstall applications that do not use. In addition to save disk space, you also prevent your notebook slowdown down.Be resource-conserving backups of the operating system, drivers and applications commonly used in a secondary partition so that you can do to reinstall some of his own face if the issues when traveling. Bring driver CDs and recovery disks.

Security notebook

Do not be a jerk
Do not bring your laptop to hitches and shaking. This will help prevent damage to your hard drive.Preferably, power off the notebook before moving from one place to another.

Dusty laptop does not impress
Protect your laptop from dust. Ensure the vents are clean to allow good air circulation.

Drinks 1000 and laptop-A no no
Do not place containers full of beverages (hot or cold) near his notebook in order to avoid accidental spills.

Tips for saving energy
That can be managed by the advantages
Set the device to turn off the LCD screen, hard drive and after fixed intervals of time.

How To Take Care Of Your Laptop Computer

As the proud owner of a laptop computer, you’ll want to keep your machine in the best possible condition.

Aside from cleaning your screen and dusting the keyboard, however, you’ll need to take a few extra steps to maintain your laptop’s health:

– Play it cool

A laptop computer generates a lot of heat, especially when running the latest high-powered software. Too much heat and you risk damaging the internal circuitry.

Always try to keep your laptop in a well-ventilated, cool environment. And ensure you don’t block the fan grills on the sides, back, or bottom of the machine at any time.

– Handle the screen carefully

Avoid touching or playing with your LCD screen.

Yes, it might be fun to watch the waves generated by your finger against the screen, but LCD displays are fragile devices that must be cared for.

Take care when cleaning the screen too, and use only approved cleaning materials.

You won’t want to pay the money for screen repairs or, even worse – a new machine entirely.

– Don’t drop it

Whatever you do, don’t drop your laptop computer! Keep it safe inside of a carrying case when moving around or traveling.

Don’t leave it on the edge of a table or on an unstable support of some kind. One ill fated drop to the floor could spell death for your mobile office.

Try to make sure the rubber feet underneath are in good condition and are still attached. This will prevent the device from sliding around accidentally.

– Be careful with those drinks…

If you need to have a drink while working or playing, be careful not to spill it.

Your laptop computer could suffer the consequences from just a few drops of liquid poured in the right places.

While you probably do eat and drink around it regardless, you will want to occasionally wipe down the edges, the keyboard, the touchpad, and maybe even wipe down the screen to keep any dirt from accumulating.

– Just say no to viruses

Security wise, make sure you obtain an anti-virus program.

Secondly, keep it updated!

Buying an anti-virus one month and not updating it for the next six really negates it purpose. Your laptop computer could be exposed to hundreds and thousands of new viruses every month if you don’t update your virus definitions.

Most anti-virus programs have automatic update methods, eliminating the need for you to have to remember to do it manually.

– Avoid Popups

Pop-ups are particularly annoying on a laptop computer. Trying to close a bunch of windows without a regular mouse can be a nuisance.

You’ll want a pop-up blocker, such as the Google Toolbar (located at http://tools.google.com), to prevent these pop- up ads.

Many intrusive forms of advertising, and even some viruses, can install software on your machine by using various forms of pop-ups. It’s best to get yourself a blocker and avoid the situation entirely.

– Use a firewall

Always utilize a firewall on your Internet or network- enabled laptop computer. Even if you use Windows XP’s built- in firewall (or purchase one from such companies as Norton), your security will greatly benefit from it.

Blocking out all the unnecessary ports and closing all the loopholes will prevent a hacker or virus from freely entering your hard drive.

So there you go. Combine all of the above tactics and help your laptop enjoy a happier and healthier lifestyle!

On The Proper Use Of Laptop

Respected users:
Thank you very much for trusting and using our laptop battery. Before using the battery, read this manual carefully. This instruction manual elaborates how to use and maintain the battery correctly.

Batteries are consumables, and have a limited service life. However, we can prolong the life of the laptop battery considerably through correct operation, proper charging/discharging and correct storage.

Calibrate your laptop battery to optimize its performance
Inside the laptop battery is microprocessor software, which calculates the battery volume during the charging/discharging. Batteries must be calibrated from time to time to ensure correctness of the time and the percentage displayed on the screen. You must implement a complete cycle of charging and discharging the battery at the beginning of using the computer, and repeat this cycle every two or three months. The charging and discharging procedure is as follows:
1. Set the Power Supply option first: Right click on the screen and select Property -> Screen Saver -> Power Supply -> Power Use Scheme -> Portable. In all the subsequent operations such as When Computer and Use Battery, select Never. Under the Alert option, deselect Alert for deficient battery and Alert for serious battery shortage.
2. Disconnect the power adapter and use the battery until the computer is powered off due to exhaustion of the battery.
3. Connect the power adapter until the battery is charged to 100%. Before initial use of the computer (or resuming use of the computer after long-term storage), the battery must be charged to full and discharged for 3-4 times to optimize the performance. The charging process takes more than five hours.
You must discharge the battery to let the computer power off, and then charge the battery to 100% to calibrate it. Then you can connect or disconnect the power supply anytime regardless of the status of the battery volume. Moreover, you can perform a deep charging and discharging cycle under control of the protection circuit in a time segment to calibrate the electricity statistics of the battery. However, this does not increase the actual capacity of the battery.
Tips: When the battery becomes "empty", the computer enters the hibernation mode forcibly. The battery reserves a certain electricity volume to ensure that the computer can 1000 hibernate for a time segment. When the battery is really exhausted, the computer is powered off forcibly. At this time, any open documents will be lost.

Storage of battery
If the battery is stored for a long time in the closed-circuit mode, the battery is damaged. If the battery needs to remain idle in a month or a longer time, remove the battery out of the computer, charge it to 60%-80% and store it in a dry, cool and clean place. If the battery remains idle for a long time, the electricity of the battery is ultimately lost and the battery may be damaged. Therefore, after the battery is stored for a time period, it is necessary to perform an effective charging and discharging cycle for the battery. By performing a complete effective charging and discharging cycle for the battery every month, you can ensure a proper storage status and a reasonable service life of the battery.

Safety of battery
Do not short-circuit the battery. Short circuit leads to serious damage to the battery.
Do not let the battery fall or knock or misuse the battery for fear of exposing the corrosive substance inside the electric core.
Do not expose the battery near a heat source, a moist place or a rainy place.
Do not burn batteries. Keep the battery far away from the fire source and other extreme heat sources. Exposing the battery in an extreme heat source may lead to explosion.
Do not attempt to dissolve, repair or alter the battery set. Otherwise, the battery may burn due to overheat. The penetration of the corrosive agent, alkali solution or other electrolyte may lead to fire, harm and even personal death. Do not pierce the battery with a pointy object.

Quick Q&A:
1. Question: How long can a new battery drive the computer?
Answer: It is difficult to determine the operation time of the laptop battery. The actual operation time depends on how much electricity is required by the device. The screen size, hard disk and other accessories may consume extra electricity and shorten the operation time. The total operation time of the battery also depends on the design of the device. Generally, a battery of a standard volume is designed to drive the computer for more than two hours.
2. Question: Why is the electricity reduced before the battery is put into use?
Answer: Due to influence of ambient humidity and non-insulated environment, the battery is consumed naturally. Depending on the newness and quality of the battery, the electricity of the battery is reduced by about 1% in 3-4 days. Therefore, a moderate reduction of electricity is normal.
3. Question: Do I have to remove the battery when I use the AC supply?
Answer: Generally, the charging of a laptop battery begins only when the electricity volume is lower than 95%. Due to existence of natural consumption, the battery consumption is basically the same no matter whether you remove the battery or not while the computer is working. However, we recommend you not to remove the battery while operating the computer because this prevents the data loss in case of abrupt interruption of the AC supply. If you remove the battery, wrap it into a fresh keeping film and put in a dry and cool place. Remember to perform a complete charging and discharging cycle for the battery every month to prevent the battery from losing activity.
4. Question: Is the battery life reduced if the battery is charged before being exhausted?
Answer: The calculation of the battery life is based on complete cycles of charging and discharging. The life of a lithium battery is generally 300-400 cycles. You do not need to worry whether the battery is charged for a cycle once the AC supply is connected. Only a complete cycle of charging or discharging counts as a cycle when calculate the battery life.
5. The electricity volume is still displayed as 0% after my battery has been charged for 20 hours; and the computer is powered off immediately after the AC supply is interrupted. Why?
Answer: First, check whet 1000 her the battery contacts the laptop properly. Improper contact makes it impossible to charge the battery even if the communication data of the battery is readable. In this case, try to unplug and plug the battery for more times. If you hear a clatter after inserting the battery into the laptop, it is generally regarded as proper contact. Try inserting for more times, and you will know whether the laptop contacts the battery properly. Pay attention to this especially when you use an IBM laptop. If you are sure that the battery contacts the laptop properly but the battery still does not work normally, the battery may be substandard. This problem is caused by two factors: (1) The line board of the battery is damaged or short-circuited; (2) the battery may be incompatible with your laptop, which is a technical problem and needs to be solved by us. Please contact distributor to check the status of the battery.
6. Question: The battery does not work and the laptop powers off immediately after I disconnect the AC supply when the battery is charged to a certain percentage or even 100%. Why?
Answer: When this problem occurs, check whether the ambient temperature is too high. If the laptop is used in a high-temperature environment for a long period, the battery will be disconnected for purpose of protection. In this case, in order to prevent accidents, shut down the laptop first, take out the battery, and then reload the battery. Another possibility is that your computer is faulty in the process of charging. In this case, check the computer because the charging circuit of the computer tends to fail in case of charging. In this case, use the original battery instead and check whether the computer works normally. If the problem persists, contact our distributor to replace the battery.
7. Question: My Dell laptop does not identify the battery and displays "the battery is not compatible with this computer, please insert Dell battery", with the indicator blinking. Why?
Answer: This information tells that the battery is not compatible. In this case, contact your distributor to replace the battery. Feed back the information to our suppliers so that we can improve and enhance the battery compatibleness in time.
8. Question: When I put the battery into the computer, the computer shuts down automatically; when I take the battery out, the computer works normally. Why?
Question: That indicates the battery is damaged. Please use a normal battery instead. That occurs rarely and is possibly caused by technical faults arising from short-circuit protection of the battery interface.
9. Question: My battery makes the computer shut down directly without alerting or changing into the hibernation status. This occurs for several times in a few minutes after the battery is charged to full. Why?
Answer: Operate according to "Calibrate your laptop battery to optimize its performance" described herein above. If the problem persists, consult the local distributor.
10. Question: The battery volume is displayed as 30% after the battery is initially charged for several hours. Why? How can I charge the battery to 100%?
Answer: Operate according to "Calibrate your laptop battery to optimize its performance" described above. If the problem persists, consult the local distributor.
11. Question: Why does the computer display completion of charging only 10 minutes after start of initial charging the battery?
Answer: Operate according to "Calibrate your laptop battery to optimize its performance" described above. If the problem persists, consult the local distributor.
12. Question: My battery works for three hours initially, but then it cannot be charged further. Is the battery faulty?
Answer: Operate according to "Calibrate your laptop battery to optimize its performance" described above. If the problem persists, consult the local distributor.
13. Question: I wonder how many hours my new battery can run on the computer.
Answer: Generally, the service duration of a battery e28 is directly related to the consumption power of the computer. For example, if the computer has a 10.4? screen and a low-consumption CPU, the computer consumes a power of about 10WH-12WH in one hour of normal service. The output power provided by a working battery is: Nominal voltage multiplied with the nominal capacity is the total output power available from the battery. For example, if the battery is 11.1 V and 4400 mAh nominally, the available power output is 48.8 WH, and the battery can run for about four hours on this computer with a 10.4? screen. The power consumed is also related to the running status of the computer. If the computer is used for playing games or DVD, the computer consumes more power in the full-speed running status, and the service duration of the battery is shortened accordingly.
14. Question: How do I calculate the power consumed by my computer in an hour?
Answer: Such data is available from the relevant professional website. Generally, the power consumed by the computer during the running is related to the size of the computer screen, CPU, memory, hard disk and the power saving circuit design of the computer mainboard. Generally the computer screen size is 13.3?, 14? and 15?, and the power consumed by a standby computer is about 15WH, 18WH and 20WH respectively. Some P4 computers are defective in the power consumption design and generally consume more power. The computers prevalent in the market now are excellent in the power consumption design. The top brand computers are rather excellent in the design of power saving mode, especially SONY, IBM and TOSHIBA.
15. Question: The rated voltage of my original battery is 14.4 V or 14.8 V but the rated voltage of your battery of the same model is 10.8 V or 11.1 V. Is it really applicable to the computer of the same model?
Answer: The safe DC voltage range of a laptop is 5.5 V – 24 V, which is evidenced by the power adapter equipped for the computer. The equipped battery or the original battery falls within a safe voltage range required for rated work. As we know, the laptop batteries are lithium batteries which are characterized by: The voltage increases when the battery is charged to full, and decreases when the battery is discharged. For example, the actual effective working voltage range available from a nominal 11.1 V – mAH battery is 9 V – 12.6 V. The voltage is about 12.6 V when the battery is charged to full and is about 9 V – 10 V when the battery is discharged. However, 9 V – 12.6 V is the effective working voltage available from the battery to the computer. With respect to the principles of DC supply design of the computer, the original manufacturer of any computer designs the supply line of the computer mainboard in that way. Therefore, the batteries are interoperable and safe no matter whether the rated voltage of the original battery is 10.8 V, 11.1 V, 14.4 V or 14.8 V.

Few Guidelines When Buying a Laptop

When purchasing your next laptop, in addition to the choice of material or brand or characteristics, it is advisable to ensure the following features:

Weight: a laptop obviously will be transported, therefore it is essential to choose the lightest possible. Be careful however, sometimes the weight is mentioned without the external devices as DVD Writer.

Autonomy: The autonomy of the computer is directly dependent on the consumption of its components and the characteristics of the battery.

Type Ni-Mh battery: are more powerful than nickel-cadmium batteries.

Type Li-Ion battery: rechargeable batteries fitted to most laptops. The Li-Ion batteries offer excellent performance for a modest cost. In addition, the Li-Ion batteries do not suffer of memory effect, which means that it is not necessary to empty the battery completely before recharging the unit.

Type Li-Polymer battery has performance equivalent to the Li-Ion batteries, but much lighter as the liquid electrolyte (or ionic solution) and the micro porous separator of Li-Ion batteries are replaced by a much lighter solid polymer (polyacrylonitrile). However this type of battery is not an asset because the charging time is greater and their life is relatively low. It usually defines the autonomy of the laptop by the average time of activity of the laptop in standby/use.

Temperature of operation: The various components of a laptop work results in an increase in temperature that sometimes could be really high. Overheating could appear too, especially when the laptop works with the screen closed, because this could prevent a good heat dissipation (Joule effect).

Noise: For some models of laptops, the fans used for heat dissipation could be really noisy. It is also the case for the motors driving the rotating hard drives or CD / DVD. It is strongly advised to seek information on the noise level of the computer when it works.

Laptops are more practical than the desktops. You will have the ability to work wherever you go and this could be fun. Probably you will spend a bit more than for a desktop, but if you want to save some money there are always refurbished laptops offers.

Properly Cleaning Your Computer

A regular cleaning of your computer means a considerable improvement in its effectiveness. You should dedicate 20-30 minutes every 3 months to clean your computer. Here are a few tips:

- Computer keyboard cleaning. Your keyboard gathers a lot of dust and dirt. The keys become sticky and slow down your speed. First, unplug the keyboard when you clean it.

Turn it upside down and shake well to remove crumbs and dirt. Clean the keys using a soft brush or a can of compressed air while holding it upside down. Clean the key tops with a damp cotton cloth using either a mild detergent or rubbing alcohol.

Do not spill liquid over it. If you do so, then wipe it off immediately and let it dry completely. It is a smart idea to keep your keyboard and monitor covered with a cloth when you are not using them.

- Cleaning computer mouse. Take off the cover at the back of the mouse by rotating it anti-clockwise. The ball will come out. There are two thin wheels. Use your fingertips to scratch out the dust that is sticking there. Also shake out dirt that gathers in the hole.

You can wipe the wheels with a mild cleaning agent. Wipe off the ball well with a wet cloth. Use a mild detergent to clean the outside of the mouse. Dry with a soft cloth. Put the ball back into your mouse and close it up.

- Cleaning computer monitor. Use a cloth dampened in water. Do not use detergent or other liquid. Be careful especially with laptop screens that are very sensitive. The strokes should be top to bottom. Paper cloths are highly recommended for monitor screens to avoid any damage.

You can use a mild detergent for the cover. For holes at the back of the cover use an air can spray to take out dust. These vents should be cleaned to avoid overheating of the monitor.

- Remove the case and get to the area where all the hardware parts are located. Cleaning this area is important. Use an air spray to blow out all the dust gathered here. Always ensure that the spray is held in an upright position and blow the dust out of the machine. Everything should be unplugged and avoid any physical contact with the components.

- For CD-ROM drive use a CD-ROM cleaner available with retailers. Cleaning the CD drive prevents reading and writing errors. To clean your CDs just wet a cloth in water and rub it from center to the edge to avoid any scratches.

New Laptop Usage Tips

laptopsOnce you’ve got your new laptop, the first thing you think about, instinctively, is tuning it on and being productive. Before you’ve even got it out of the box, however, there are certain things which should really be looked after. This also applies to laptops/notebooks which are already in use.

1. First of all, it surprises me how many people don’t have a carry case for their laptop. They are cheap and most high streets have at least one store selling them. Even if you convince yourself that your Laptop will only live on a desk, there will come a time where you’ll want to carry it somewhere and, unprotected, you’re open to accidental disasters. Even carrying a Laptop plus car keys can be tricky without a carry case. For laptop repairs, I carry a laptop rucksack for this very reason.

2. The word ‘Laptop’ can be misleading, Notebook computers are not really designed to be used on your lap. The best place for a notebook is on a desk. Use of Laptops on your lap or a cushion or bed can lead to overheating as many have vents underneath and most need air circulation underneath to aid cooling. A simple remedy for this is a lap tray, the type with a hard top and a soft cushion underneath usually sold as dinner trays. They make a perfect base for your laptop and is something which I’ve recommended for some years now and use myself.

3. The next tip is probably the least laptop-specific but just as important. Power surge protection! Whilst it’s quite normal for people to think of surge protection for devices fixed to a specific location, equipment which is used in various locations often gets overlooked. The average price of a replacement laptop power supply is between 50 and 60 for branded replacements at the moment. A power surge protection socket is less than 10. It makes sense to use one in order to protect your laptop power supply and the laptop itself.

4. This last tip relates to desktop PCs also and is a recurring theme of mine. If you own a laptop you really should have a usb key for simple data transfer, storage and backup. In the early days of mass computer use, floppy disks were the convenient way to store and transfer small files. We now have a replacement which can do so much more for very little outlay. The question isn’t ‘why should you’, but ‘why shouldn’t you’ have one?. You can pick up a 1gb usb key for as little as 5. Having a laptop without one is needless these days.

So there you have it, tips which make sense in the world of modern computing. As I always advocate, you don’t need to spend a small fortune to do things correctly. You do, however, have to spend a little to save a small fortune. At ‘A Star Universal’ Computers in Kent UK, we often give these tips as information for customers whose laptops we’ve repaired after a disaster which could have been avoided by following these guidelines. Hopefully you’re reading this in good time.

Why Laptop Computers Get Very Hot

The popularity of Laptop computers continues to increase every day. It is a fact that most people buying computers for business or private use do prefer laptops to desktop computers.

Laptop computers have many advantages over desktop computers. Apart from the obvious, being smaller in size and having the CPU and screen attached as one unit, it can be easily moved from place to place. They are also very light in weight and come in a variety of sleek designs, shapes and sizes.

The reason why they get hot:

The feature that make the laptop a very versatile and much popular product, its small size, is also a cause of the major draw back it has, it gets hot with use.

The reason why this happens is a simple one. Every machine that does work produces energy in one form or the other. The laptop is no exception, and because most of the components are small and customers are forever demanding faster processors in their laptops, they tend to generate a lot of heat as they process information very quickly.

Ways by which laptop manufacturers disperse the heat:

The laptop’s CPU is housed in a tight compartment and the generated will damage the unit if not dispersed. Engineers came up with several ways to disperse the heat produced by the device that comes with every laptop you manufactured.

They include:

- A Fan
– Strategically situated vents
– A heat sink to draw the heat out to cooler parts of the laptop.

Even though all these features help disperse the heat produced by the computer unit, the heat does build up with prolonged use. Having an overloaded, overworked and very hot notebook on your lap is a recipe for disaster. The laptop could crash, the heat could damage your skin and for men there is the risk of infertility due to heat exposure to the genital area.
